Smart bio+technologies in North-East Romania
The North-East Regional Development Agency, in cooperation with DG Regional and Urban Policy and Joint Research Center (JRC) of European Commission, is organizing on Monday, June 6, 2016, at Unirea Hotel in Iasi (Piata Unirii nr. 5), a workshop aiming at identifying the challenges and opportunities for promotion of specific development projects in the following fields:
- Healthy life (Bio-nanotechnologies and medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology);
- Food security, sustainable agriculture and bio-economy (agricultural biotechnologies);
- Reliable, clean and efficient energy (industrial biotechnologies);
- Clean, safe water (biotechnologies focused on environment protection, pollution-removing and waste recovery).
The focus group is addressed to companies, research units, academia, public administrations and civil society as well and is organized under the framework of the pilot project “Support for operationalization of smart specialization strategies (RIS3) in lagging regions ".

Economic growth and governance in North-East Region with the support of European Commission
On 18th of February 2016 was held in Piatra Neamt a working meeting organized by the North-East Regional Development Agency and Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission - to mark the debut in North-East Region of the projects “Competitive advantages and potential of smart specialization at the regional level in Romania" and "Support for economic growth and governance in lagging European regions ".
Carried out within the preparatory actions of the European Parliament dedicated to regions with reduced economic growth, and benefit from the partnership of DG Regio, the two projects aim at providing technical assistance for the development and monitoring of regional strategy for smart specialization (RIS3) and facilitate the interconnection with national strategy by identifying and supporting exploiting the economic and innovation potential of the region, and with trans-national and inter-regional partnership support.
The purpose of the meeting in Piatra Neamt was to introduce and position the different categories of regional actors (public authorities, academia and business) to the regional concept of smart specialization, to set goals and expectations that North-East RDA and region have from this project.
On this occasion, North-East RDA stressed the importance of achieving a common plan of action to increase the capacity of implementing RIS3 at regional level and optimization of capacity for entrepreneurial discovery, also identifying and addressing effectively the challenges in this field. It was also stressed the importance of improving cooperation between universities and industry, both in applied research, and the correlation of training programmes with the specific requirements of the local economy.
At this first meeting with exploratory purpose, have attended representatives of county councils from North-East Region, of the main universities in the capital of Moldova, representatives of business environment and civil society, which will include, along with the JRC, North-East RDA and other stakeholders in the region, an interdisciplinary working group dedicated to this project.
Implemented starting with 1st of January 2016 in seven regions in European countries (Romania, Poland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Hungary and Bulgaria), the two projects will have a duration of 2 years.
